What Apple’s built-in Dictation does well
If you just need words typed as you say them, it’s already on your Mac — and it’s good:
- It's free and already on your Mac — turn it on in System Settings › Keyboard.
- On a Mac with Apple silicon, dictation is processed on your device in many languages, with no internet connection needed.
- Spoken commands for punctuation, formatting and emoji — “question mark”, “new paragraph”, “heart emoji”.
- Dictate as long as you like, and on Apple silicon you can keep typing while you speak.
What Write My Flow adds to dictation on your Mac
Cleans up how people actually talk
Ums, false starts and rambles become clear sentences. Say “scratch that” and it's as if you never said it.
Tone that matches the app
Casual in chat, professional in email, exact in a code editor — with per-app rules you can edit.
A dictionary that learns your words
Teach it names, brands and jargon once and they're spelled your way everywhere. It notices words you use often and offers to remember them.
Spoken lists become written lists
“Three things: one… two… three…” arrives as a tidy bulleted list, however you phrased it.
A memory of everything you've dictated
Every dictation is saved to History on your Mac. Search it the way you think, or ask it — “what did I say about pricing?” — and get the dictations the answer came from.
Snippets and sync
Say a short phrase to insert an address or sign-off in full. On Pro, your dictionary, snippets and history follow you to your other computers, encrypted before they leave.
Private, offline dictation on your Mac
Normally your speech goes to our speech service and the polish runs through our servers — nothing is kept. Turn on Private mode and both happen on your Mac instead: download the offline speech model once and dictation keeps working with Wi-Fi off. Exactly where your words go.
Mac dictation questions
- Is Write My Flow better than Apple Dictation?
- They do different jobs. Apple's Dictation types what you say, free, and on Apple silicon it runs on your Mac by default. Write My Flow cleans up what you say, matches the app you're in, learns your words and remembers everything you've dictated.
- Can I hold the fn key, like Apple's dictation?
- Yes. Choose fn 🌐 under the hotkey box in Settings. If a tap of fn opens the emoji picker, set “Press 🌐 key to” to “Do Nothing” in System Settings › Keyboard. Out of the box the shortcut is Option+Space, and combos like Cmd+Shift+Space work too.
- Does it work offline on a Mac?
- Yes. Download the offline speech model once (about 148 MB) and dictation keeps working with Wi-Fi off. Private mode keeps everything on your Mac even when you're online.
- Is my voice sent anywhere?
- Normally your speech is streamed to our speech service and polished through our servers. Neither keeps it: audio is never stored, and we count words for your plan, never the words themselves. In Private mode, nothing leaves your Mac.
- Which Macs does it run on?
- Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 11 Big Sur or later — one download covers both.
Try it on your own voice.
