Dictation without internet
Download the offline speech model once — about 148 MB — and dictation keeps working whenever your connection doesn’t. If the download drops on a patchy connection, it carries on from where it stopped.
Private mode: on-device speech to text
One switch, from the menu or Settings. Your voice is turned into words on your computer, nothing is sent anywhere, and those dictations never sync. History marks them Private, and a padlock shows on screen while it’s on.

Normally Write My Flow uses the cloud for the best quality. Private mode moves every step onto your machine.

Normally: Our online speech service, over an encrypted connection. Audio is never stored.
Private mode: On your computer, with the offline speech model.

Private mode: On your computer. Lighter than the online polish.

Normally: Saved on your computer. Synced only if you turn on Sync, encrypted first.

Private voice to text that still tidies up
Offline, your words aren’t dropped in raw. They’re cleaned up on your computer:
- Spoken commands like “new paragraph” and “full stop” become real layout
- Amounts become figures — “twenty five pounds fifty” becomes £25.50
- Spoken lists become bullet points
- Stumbles and repeated words are cleaned up
- Your snippets still expand
It’s lighter than the online polish — it won’t restructure a rambling sentence or change your tone — but it costs nothing and works with no signal. Try it in Settings → Try offline formatting before you rely on it.
A dictation history that lives on your machine
Every dictation is saved on your computer, Private mode included — so the thing you said on the train is still there when you need it. Asking your history questions in plain English uses our online service, so that part needs a connection.
Offline dictation questions
- Does offline dictation cost extra?
- No. It works on the free plan too. The free plan's 2,000 words a week count only the words we polish for you online, so dictation in Private mode or offline doesn't use them up.
- Does it work on Mac and Windows?
- Yes. The offline speech model and Private mode work in the Mac and Windows apps alike.
- How big is the download?
- About 148 MB, once. If the download drops part-way on a patchy connection, press Download again and it carries on from where it stopped.
- Is offline dictation as good as online?
- Online is still our best: its polish restructures a rambling sentence and matches your tone to the app. Offline, your words are still tidied up — layout, amounts, lists, stumbles — but not rewritten. That's the trade for nothing leaving your computer.
- What's the difference between offline and Private mode?
- With the model downloaded, dictation keeps working whenever your connection drops. Private mode is a promise: nothing is sent anywhere, even when you're online, and those dictations never sync.
- Can I ask my history questions offline?
- Your history is always saved on your computer, Private mode dictations included. Asking it questions in plain English uses our online service, so that part needs a connection.
